My Monster Mommy

by Megan Ryan
illusrated by Brenna Senger

My Monster Mommy written by Megan Ryan and illusrated by Brenna Senger captures the imaginative (and often dramatic) perspective of a young boy who is convinced that his mother is a monster. He builds his case by pointing to her "monstrous" behaviors. The story cleverly shape those everyday moments you experience as a parent through the lens of a child's over-the-top fantasy, creating a narrative that is humorous and instantly relatable.

This book is an good choice for adults to read aloud to younger children, particularly because it uses words a small child might not understand. While toddlers and preschoolers might not be familiar with words like "fraught" or "personal hygiene" on their own, hearing them read aloud in a fun, engaging context is a fantastic way to expand their vocabulary. The prose itself can sometimes be a bit awkward for a read-aloud, with occasional slant rhymes and an inconsistent meter.

The illustrations add another layer of charm and humor to the book. The boy's facial expressions capture his exaggerated feelings of dismay, suspicion, and confusion with each of his concerns. Young readers will also delight in searching for the adorable stuffed dinosaur that is cleverly included somewhere on every page. Look closely at the pictures to find some fun details like dust “bunnies” under the couch.

This book can absolutely open up some fun discussion on different ideas and points of view. Definitely look for this one at the library.
